Communist China’s ruling party’s own news agency has launched its own search engine.
The move is designed to fill the gap left after Google quit the country last year following arguments over censorship of its search results.
The government-owned Xinhua news agency and state telecoms business China Mobile, have joined forces to create panguso.com.
The new site is effectively Chinese authorities’ attempt to control what its citizens can view online. They have no problems with them using the web for education and business purposes, but try to block any material which is considered obscene or subversive.
It is almost a year since Google closed down its Chinese operations, after saying that it was no longer prepared to accede to government demands to censor its search engine results.
